Stockhausen

Whilst not a project per sé, Tristram’s work on Stockhausen’s music has taken a considerable role in his musical life, and deserves a description of its own. The composer Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928-2007) was the greatest contributor to the repertoire of the trumpet since JS Bach. from 1975 until his death in December 2007 he developed an enormous body of work for the trumpet (predominantly with his son, the viruoso trumpeter, Markus Stockhausen) , most notably the SciFi Morality Play SIRIUS, and LICHT, Stockhausen’s seven operas he composed from 1978- 2004, comprising 29 hours of music, in which the trumpet takes a central dramatic role. Much of Stockhausen’s music requires of its performers levels of musical commitment rarely found anywhere else. His writing for the trumpet revolutionized the way it can be played- the coloristic possibilities, the dramatic potential and sheer technique and stamina of the soloist.

Tristram had the honor of working with Stockhausen on several occasions, and these were formative experiences. Tristram continues to explore this masters music, and promote it in his own concerts.. He is continually astounded at the fearless intelligence of this modern master.
